Czechia by Train beyond Prague: An 8-Day Brno, Olomouc and Ostrava Route

Brno rooftops, Olomouc Town Hall and the former Vítkovice industrial area, for an eight-day Czech train route.

If you have already been to Prague, give a different part of Czechia a week of your attention. This eight-day train route links Brno, Olomouc and Ostrava, with three nights, two nights and two nights respectively. You get café stops and modern architecture, a compact city of squares, and a final stop shaped by industrial heritage.

There are only two moves between overnight bases. That leaves room to enjoy each place instead of spending every morning packing. The itinerary starts on arrival in Brno and finishes on departure from Ostrava: your journey into the country and your trip home are additional planning decisions.

The route at a glance

DaysOvernight baseNightsWhat the time is for
1–3Brno3Arrival, old town, cafés and an architecture or castle day
4–5Olomouc2Train from Brno, squares, astronomical clock and an unhurried second day
6–7Ostrava2Train from Olomouc, city centre and a planned Dolní Vítkovice visit

Eight days means seven nights, rather than eight full sightseeing days. Days 4 and 6 include rail travel, and the first and last days depend on your arrival and departure times. Choose accommodation with those movements in mind.

This route suits someone who enjoys walking through cities, stopping for food and coffee, and choosing a few visits rather than ticking off capital cities. If mountains, swimming or nightlife every evening are the main reason for your trip, build a different route around that priority.

Days 1–3: Brno for cafés, old streets and architecture

Day 1: arrive and keep the evening simple

Travel to Brno, leave your bag and get your bearings. Make the first evening a short walk and dinner near where you are staying. An itinerary that requires a timed museum visit immediately after an international journey is fragile before it has even started.

For accommodation, compare the walk from Brno hlavní nádraží with the location you actually want to spend time in. A central room can make this short stay easier, but check noise and access as well as the distance on the map.

Day 2: build a day around the old town

Use Zelný trh, the Old Town Hall area and the streets towards Petrov as the backbone of a walk. Keep the afternoon loose enough for a café, a longer lunch or the climb towards Špilberk. The official Brno destination guide is a useful starting point for choosing which landmarks you want to go inside.

The point of three nights is that you do not have to fit every interior into one day. Pick one substantial visit and let the rest of the day happen between it and your next meal.

Day 3: choose your main visit

If Villa Tugendhat is your priority, check the villa’s official tour and ticket calendar before fixing your Brno dates. Places are limited; confirm the tour language and what the ticket includes. Seeing the exterior or garden is a different experience from an interior tour.

If the visit you want is unavailable, give the day a different purpose: more of Špilberk, an architecture walk or a slower day in the city. Do not plan the whole stop around an unbooked ticket.

Days 4–5: Olomouc without rushing straight through

Day 4: move to the next base

Look up Brno hl. n. → Olomouc hl. n. for your actual date. The ČD line 301 timetable shows the rail corridor via Nezamyslice and Prostějov; use the live journey planner for the departure, changes and any replacement transport applying to your trip. This guide does not fix a departure time for a date you have not chosen yet.

Leave space for checking out, getting to the station and dropping your bag at the other end. In Olomouc, the main station and the historic centre are separate parts of the arrival: work out the final connection to your accommodation using the city’s transport information.

Spend the rest of the day around Horní náměstí and Dolní náměstí. Find somewhere for dinner rather than treating the transfer day as a second full sightseeing day.

Olomouc Town Hall, with its tower and astronomical clock.

Day 5: squares, the clock and time to linger

Start with the Town Hall and its astronomical clock. Take time for the squares, fountains and small detours between them. The city’s Arion Fountain page gives you another landmark to connect into the walk.

The Holy Trinity Column has been undergoing restoration. An August 2026 city update reported scaffolding coming down while further work continued. If seeing it unobstructed matters to you, check the latest local information rather than assuming a historic photograph reflects your visit.

Two nights work well here because they give you a full day between transfers. You can stay for a café or a longer lunch without watching the clock for an onward train that afternoon.

Days 6–7: Ostrava and its industrial landscape

Day 6: arrive at the right station for your stay

Search Olomouc hl. n. → Ostrava and compare the arrival stations offered. Ostrava-Svinov and Ostrava hlavní nádraží are different stations; the best choice depends on the service and your accommodation. Include the local journey when judging an arrival time. Visit Ostrava’s Svinov information and the DPO network maps help with that final leg.

Keep the afternoon for settling in and seeing the centre. Resist adding a timed industrial tour just because the train appears to arrive early enough on paper.

Day 7: give Dolní Vítkovice a proper place in the plan

The former industrial area at Dolní Vítkovice is the reason for ending this route in Ostrava. It gives the trip a visibly different final chapter after Brno and Olomouc.

Choose the official visit or tour you actually want: the blast-furnace tour, Bolt Tower and café access should not be treated as interchangeable tickets. Check language, stairs, weather restrictions and the current meeting point before booking.

Work backwards from that booking to your local transport and lunch. Keep the rest of the day flexible for the city or another cultural visit whose opening you have checked. This is more useful than filling every spare hour with a second attraction.

Tickets or a rail pass: compare this particular trip

For this itinerary, start by pricing the two main journeys separately: Brno–Olomouc and Olomouc–Ostrava. Add your arrival and departure journeys only if they belong to the same pass comparison. Then compare the total with the pass you are considering, including any compulsory seat reservations.

With only two main moves between bases, a pass is not automatically the best-value purchase. Equally, do not assume that the cheapest advance ticket gives you the flexibility you want. Compare the operator, train restrictions, change conditions and refund terms alongside the price.

Reservations need a service-specific check. For the 2026 timetable, ČD introduced compulsory reservations on its commercial Ex1 services on the Prague–Ostrava corridor, including travel between intermediate stops. That can matter on Olomouc–Ostrava; check your selected train rather than applying one rule to every Czech service.

Do not assume that a rail pass includes local trams, buses or attraction admission. Check each separately. Our pass versus individual tickets guide explains how to compare the whole journey without overlooking extras.

When to go and what to book first

This is a city route, so you can adapt it to different seasons. Longer daylight makes outdoor wandering easier; colder or wetter days call for a confirmed indoor visit and shorter walks. The photographs illustrate the destinations, not guaranteed weather or the conditions on your travel dates.

Book in this order if you have a fixed week:

  • Check how you will reach Brno and leave Ostrava.
  • Look for the Villa Tugendhat tour if it is essential to you.
  • Choose your Dolní Vítkovice visit and check its date, language and access.
  • Confirm the two rail journeys and the ticket or pass conditions.
  • Book accommodation around the seven-night split and check-in arrangements.

You do not need to add Prague to make this feel like a Czech trip. The appeal is spending enough time in three different cities to notice how they differ. Save Brno 3 nights → Olomouc 2 → Ostrava 2, then adjust the visits to your interests.
