My first solo rail trip through Japan
Asia
For a first solo trip to Japan, I wanted a route that felt manageable without spending the whole holiday moving between hotels. I chose Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka as overnight bases, with a day in Nara on the way between the last two.
Four nights in Tokyo gave me time to find my feet. In Kyoto, spreading the visits across several days helped me avoid turning every morning into a race to the next famous place. Travelling alone also meant I could change the afternoon plan without having to negotiate it with anyone.
I used individual tickets for the longer journeys and paid separately for local transport. The part that needed the most thought was the transfer through Nara with luggage.
If I repeated the trip, I would keep the same number of bases. There were plenty of other places I wanted to add, but having some unplanned time was one of the best things about this route.
The journey, stop by stop.
Tokyo
Japan · 4 nights
I kept the first day light and explored near my accommodation. After that, I grouped visits by area: Asakusa and Ueno together, then Shibuya and Harajuku, with time around Shinjuku on another day. That felt easier than crossing the city repeatedly. Before the journey to Kyoto, I checked the departure station and left enough time to find the right platform without rushing.
Kyoto
Japan · 4 nights
I gave Higashiyama and Gion their own day, visited Fushimi Inari on another morning and kept Arashiyama separate. I also left an afternoon for cafés and smaller streets rather than adding another major visit. Four nights worked well because I could change plans when I felt tired. I sorted out the luggage arrangements for Nara before checking out.
Nara
Japan · 0 nights (day visit or transit)
This was a day visit between Kyoto and Osaka, so I didn’t change hotels again. I walked through Nara Park and chose a small number of temple visits rather than trying to see everything. I checked the station names carefully because JR Nara and Kintetsu-Nara are different places. Having a luggage plan made the stop much more enjoyable.
Osaka
Japan · 2 nights
I arrived after the Nara visit and spent the first evening around Namba and Dotonbori. The next day was a mix of the Osaka Castle park area and time around Umeda, with plenty of room for food stops. I didn’t add another excursion. For the final morning, I planned backwards from my airport journey instead of squeezing in one last attraction.
