Three weeks by rail: Prague, the Danube and the Adriatic
Europe
Three friends, three weeks and a route that gradually changed from big capitals to smaller cities and the Adriatic. We started in Prague, continued through Vienna and Budapest, then travelled to Ljubljana, Trieste, Venice and Bologna.
We mostly stayed in hostels and tried to give each place enough time to feel like a proper stop. Budapest got an extra night, partly for sightseeing and partly because we knew we would need a slower day by then. We used a rail pass for the main journeys and kept local transport separate.
The biggest lesson was that a travel day still takes energy, even when the train journey looks straightforward. Budapest to Ljubljana was the clearest example: we were happy to arrive, eat and leave the exploring until the next morning.
We dropped a couple of possible day trips along the way. Having time to do laundry, sleep in or spend an afternoon separately made travelling together much easier.
The journey, stop by stop.
Prague
Czechia · 3 nights
We started with the Old Town and Charles Bridge, then spent more time around Letná and Vinohrady. One person wanted museums, another mainly wanted to walk, so we stopped trying to do absolutely everything together. Three nights gave us a good introduction before the train to Vienna. Our first evening was just dinner and a short wander near the hostel.
Vienna
Austria · 4 nights
Vienna was a mix of the historic centre, parks and long café stops. We picked one bigger visit each instead of filling the stay with palace and museum tickets. It was also our first laundry stop. Staying near useful public transport mattered more to us than being right beside a famous sight.
Budapest
Hungary · 4 nights
The extra night was worth keeping. We explored both sides of the river, visited the castle area and left a day much less structured. We also fitted in a thermal bath visit. Before leaving for Ljubljana, we checked the departure station carefully and bought food for the journey. We kept the arrival evening free rather than booking an activity.
Ljubljana
Slovenia · 3 nights
Ljubljana felt like a useful change of pace after the larger cities. We spent time along the river, walked around the old town and castle area, and had a quieter afternoon in Tivoli Park. We considered adding another excursion but decided to keep the free time. For Trieste, we checked the international connection and any changes before choosing our departure.
Trieste
Italy · 3 nights
Bologna was an easy place to finish. We walked under the porticoes, explored around Piazza Maggiore and made food a bigger part of the plan. By this point, nobody wanted another packed sightseeing schedule. We kept the final full day open and used it to revisit places we liked rather than adding another destination.
