Interrail Seat Reservations: What to Check and How to Book
Already have an Interrail or Eurail Pass? For each train, check that your pass covers the service and travel date, whether a reservation or supplement is required, and what documents you must show. If a reservation is compulsory, book the passholder product before boarding. Saving a journey in Rail Planner does not reserve a seat.
The important question is not simply “Does my pass cover Paris?” It is “Can I board this particular departure, in this class, with the documents I have?” This guide gives you a repeatable check, then applies it to London–Paris on Eurostar.

1. Check the exact service your pass covers
Write down the departure and arrival stations, date, operator, train number if published, and class. Split a journey with changes into its individual trains: one leg may need a reservation while the next does not.
Check your pass type, countries, overall validity and available travel days. A place on your route is not proof that every train serving it accepts your pass. A discount also differs from full coverage. On Interrail, use in your country of residence has its own limits. A 2nd class pass does not entitle you to travel in 1st class; a 1st class pass can be used in either. Check the Global Pass conditions.
Keep a short record for each leg: train → coverage → reservation/supplement → booking channel → documents. This is more useful than a single “all trains included” note for the whole holiday.
2. Separate compulsory, optional and unavailable reservations
Open the details for the exact train in the Interrail timetable or Rail Planner, then check the operator’s current instructions. Look for the requirement itself, rather than assuming that a fast train always needs a reservation or a regional train never does. Interrail labels trains with compulsory reservations.
| What you find | What to do |
|---|---|
| Reservation required | Obtain the correct reservation or passholder fare for that departure before boarding. A valid pass alone is insufficient. |
| Reservation optional | You can travel without reserving if your pass and journey are valid. A reservation secures a seat; without one you may have to stand when busy. |
| Reservations not offered | There is no seat reservation to buy for that service. Use your valid pass correctly and follow the operator’s seating rules. |
“Not offered” and “sold out” mean different things. The first describes a train that does not have a reservation product. The second describes availability for a product that exists. A blank search result proves neither on its own. Read the official optional-reservation explanation.
Check supplements separately. Interrail currently lists a mandatory supplement on relevant EuroCity/Railjet services between Germany or Austria and Italy even where the seat reservation is optional. Do not turn that example into a rule for every EuroCity or every Italian train. Check trains with additional supplements.
3. Use a channel that sells the passholder product
A normal ticket search and a passholder reservation search can produce different offers. Start with the operator’s passholder guidance or Interrail’s country/operator booking directory. Confirm that the channel supports your specific train: an official railway website does not necessarily sell every other operator’s reservations.
Depending on the system, the correct route may be a dedicated passholder page, a reservation-only option, or a ticket search with the pass entered as a reduction. Follow that channel’s instructions. A button called “seat only” is not a universal solution.
- Product: does the offer explicitly work with your pass, or is it a complete ordinary ticket?
- People and class: are all travellers included, with the right pass and eligible class?
- Journey: do date, stations, departure and every required leg match your plan?
- Payment: what is the final amount, including mandatory supplements and channel fees?
- Conditions: what happens if you change plans, and how will you receive the reservation?
An unexpectedly high price is a reason to inspect the product, not proof of an error. It could be a full ticket, a different class or a valid but different offer. Confirm what is being sold before paying.
4. Worked example: London–Paris with a Global Pass
Example inputs: one adult with a valid 2nd class Global Pass, travelling one way from London St Pancras International to Paris Gare du Nord on 6 November 2026. The date is a search example, not a confirmed service or available seat. No departure has been booked for this guide.
Eurostar requires an advance paid reservation for passholders on its London routes. Those routes require a Global Pass, and passholder seats are limited. For this example, the relevant class is Eurostar Standard. Check Eurostar’s passholder guidance. Interrail confirms that a 2nd class pass is restricted to Standard; a 1st class pass can use Standard or Plus. Premier is not available with the pass. Check Eurostar classes and reservations.
A. Establish the requirement
Open Eurostar’s Interrail/Eurail page and check the London-route section. Match it to London–Paris and your pass. Then use the dated timetable to identify a suitable departure and check for changes before travelling.
B. Search in the reservation service
- Open Interrail’s seat-reservation service and sign in with your account. Choose Seat Reservations → Book Seats.
- Enter London St Pancras International, Paris Gare du Nord, your date and preferred time, then search.
- Use Edit travellers to select your trip and traveller. For a group, include everyone in the same booking trip.
- Inspect the reservation options for the departure and choose the class permitted by your pass.
- Review the cart: stations, date, train, class, traveller and the complete price. Remove any earlier selection you no longer want.
- Check traveller details, delivery and the product’s change/refund terms before payment.
This sequence follows Interrail’s current self-service instructions, which include screenshots of the steps. Starting reservations in Rail Planner redirects you to a browser. This is a documented walkthrough, not a live inventory or checkout test. Check seat availability and the payable total for your departure.
As another official railway channel, Interrail lists SNCB International’s passholder reservation service for Eurostar. Use its dedicated passholder page, rather than the ordinary ticket search. Check its own fee and conditions; do not carry the fee from one seller into another seller’s total.
C. Calculate the reservation cost without treating a reference as a quote
On 10 October 2026, Interrail’s Eurostar reference lists €35 per person, one way, in Standard between London and France. Its reservation service adds a published €2 booking fee per person per train. For this one-person, one-train example, that gives a €37 reference total, excluding the pass already purchased and any separately chosen extras. This is a calculation from published fees, not a checkout quote or a promise of availability. Check the published fees and their limitations.
For your whole trip, record pass cost + required reservations/supplements + booking fees + uncovered journeys. Do not add an ordinary London–Paris ticket to the reservation total unless you deliberately choose to buy that separate ticket. If you are still deciding whether to buy a pass, use our Interrail Pass vs Individual Tickets guide for the wider comparison.
D. Keep the reservation and pass ready separately
Download the issued reservation according to the seller’s instructions and check it matches the train you selected. Separately prepare your pass for travel. A confirmation of payment is not a substitute for checking that the required travel document has actually been issued.

5. “I can buy a ticket, but I cannot find a pass reservation”
Work through these possibilities before concluding that the train is full:
- Wrong search: are you in the passholder channel, with the right pass, passengers and class? An ordinary fare appearing in a general search says little about reservation availability.
- Wrong channel: does this seller support reservations for that exact service? Check the official booking directory or contact the operator through its published channels.
- Not open yet: check the train’s booking window and your date. Windows vary by operator and service; a missing price is not a reliable sold-out notice. Check reservation opening dates.
- No passholder places: read the actual result. Eurostar explicitly has limited passholder availability, so ordinary tickets may remain after those places have gone. Do not assume every operator uses the same quota system.
- A technical or timetable issue: check for a stated error or service change. An unexplained failure leaves availability unconfirmed.
If the passholder product is unavailable, compare a different departure or date, another route with its own coverage/reservation checks, or an ordinary ticket with its full conditions. Recheck arrival time and any onward connection before committing. Do not board a reservation-compulsory service and hope that the pass will be enough.
If the issue is a future booking window, our Train Tickets Not on Sale Yet? guide explains how to keep planning without treating an unpublished fare as available.
After an uncertain payment, avoid a second purchase. Interrail’s self-service guidance says to check your reservation overview and contact support if a checkout error occurs or the reservation does not appear. Resolve the first order before paying again.
6. Before boarding: the document checklist
- Valid pass: the right holder, coverage, validity and class, with any necessary travel day available.
- Journey on the pass: for a mobile pass, add the train journey to your pass before boarding and make sure it appears on the ticket for that travel day. Merely saving it to a trip is not the final step. Each traveller needs their own valid ticket. See the mobile-pass boarding instructions.
- Required reservation and supplement: keep the issued documents accessible separately. Adding the journey to your pass does not create a reservation. Read the pass-versus-reservation explanation.
- Identity and border documents: carry the passport or ID matching your pass, plus the documents required for your route and nationality. Pass validity does not determine entry permission.
- Station arrival: check the operator’s arrival instructions. For Eurostar to or from London, allow for border and security checks using Eurostar’s station-arrival guidance, rather than treating departure time as the time to enter the station.
With a paper pass, follow its travel-day and journey-record instructions instead of the mobile steps. In either format, the pass and required reservation perform different jobs: have both ready when they are needed.
Frequently asked questions
Does adding a train in Rail Planner reserve a seat?
No. Adding the journey to your pass prepares the pass ticket; a required seat reservation must be obtained separately.
Can I travel if reservations are optional?
Yes, provided your pass and journey are valid and you meet any other service conditions. You have no allocated seat without a reservation, and may need to stand on a busy train.
Are reservations automatically refundable because my pass is flexible?
Do not assume so. Read the terms of the specific reservation or passholder fare, separately from the terms of your pass.
Do Eurail travellers follow the same checks?
Yes: start with the Eurail product you hold, then check the service, reservation channel and documents. The London–Paris example must use an eligible Global Pass. Interrail-specific residence restrictions should not be transferred automatically to Eurail.
