Christmas Markets by Train in 2026: Strasbourg, Colmar & Freiburg
Three Christmas stops. Two places to unpack. For a relaxed rail trip through Alsace and southwest Germany, stay in Strasbourg, visit Colmar for the day, then move to Freiburg. Seven days gives you room for markets, cafés and ordinary city life without turning every morning into another check-out.
This guide shows how to build that route, which 2026 market dates are published, and what to check before paying for rooms or trains. The example uses 7–13 December 2026. It is an illustrative plan, not a booked trip or a real customer’s holiday.

The route in one line
Strasbourg: 3 nights → Colmar: day trip → Freiburg: 3 nights.
Seven days, six nights and one change of accommodation. Your own arrival in Strasbourg and departure from Freiburg must fit around this regional route.

First, choose Advent dates — not just “Christmas”.
A Christmas-market trip and a trip over Christmas Day can be very different plans. Choose dates against each organiser’s calendar, then build your room nights and train journeys around them.
| Stop | Published for 2026 | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Strasbourg | Opening announced for 27 November. | The official site still includes 2025 information. Its 2026 closing date and daily hours are not treated as verified here. Check the full programme before booking. |
| Colmar | 23 November–29 December. Mon–Thu 11:00–19:00; Fri–Sun 10:00–20:00. | Holiday exceptions apply. An early weekday arrival can work for a town walk before the stalls open. |
| Freiburg | 19 November–23 December. Mon–Sat 10:00–20:30; Sun 11:30–19:30. | Closed on 22 November. Opening-day and final-day hours differ. A Christmas Day visit will miss this market. |
Check the organisers directly: Strasbourg Christmas, Colmar dates and hours and Freiburg Christmas Market. Event dates do not establish train services, accommodation availability or weather.
The example visits Colmar on a Wednesday and leaves the weekend for Freiburg. That avoids adding a Colmar weekend to this particular route; it does not promise quiet streets. If you travel on a holiday or opening weekend, reassess the plan rather than assuming the same pattern applies.
Why two bases work for this route
Colmar can be visited by rail from Strasbourg. Returning to the same room lets you leave your main bag behind and keeps the excursion free of another check-in. Freiburg then becomes a proper second stay, with time beyond its Christmas stalls.
- Choose this version if you like slow mornings, private rooms, cafés and freedom to adjust when it rains.
- Consider a night in Colmar instead if staying there later than your chosen return train matters more than avoiding a check-out. Recount the nights and compare room prices before switching.
- Keep Strasbourg as your only base if your time is short and the cross-border move would consume too much of it. You do not need all three stops to have a worthwhile trip.
A seven-day Strasbourg, Colmar and Freiburg itinerary
| Day / example date | A useful main plan | Sleep in |
|---|---|---|
| 1 · Mon 7 Dec | Arrive, check in and take a short first walk. Markets only if your arrival leaves time. | Strasbourg |
| 2 · Tue 8 Dec | Strasbourg’s centre and Petite France, with a relaxed market session and an indoor break. | Strasbourg |
| 3 · Wed 9 Dec | Colmar day trip: old town, markets and an evening return to your existing room. | Strasbourg |
| 4 · Thu 10 Dec | Travel via Offenburg to Freiburg. Leave the afternoon flexible. | Freiburg |
| 5 · Fri 11 Dec | Münstermarkt in the morning, old-town wandering and Christmas stalls later. | Freiburg |
| 6 · Sat 12 Dec | A free Freiburg day. A short outdoor walk is optional, depending on conditions. | Freiburg |
| 7 · Sun 13 Dec | Check out and depart. Add a final stop only if luggage and onward travel allow. | No additional night |
Count it before you book: three Strasbourg nights plus three Freiburg nights equals six. Colmar adds an excursion, not a hotel night. If getting to the region takes an overnight stop, add it outside this seven-day example.
Strasbourg: see the city between markets
Make the first evening small: food, a short walk and getting your bearings. Use the full day for the cathedral area and Petite France, then return to the part of the centre you want to see after dark. Use the current organiser’s map rather than trying to collect every market in one session.
Choose accommodation by the journeys you will actually make: station to room, room to centre and back again. Staying near the station can help with Colmar and your departure. Staying centrally can shorten evening walks but puts you closer to busy visitor streets. Neither location guarantees rest; check recent comments, room position and late check-in arrangements.

Colmar: take a day bag and plan the return first
Before leaving Strasbourg, choose a sensible return train and identify an earlier fallback. Then shape the day around the old town, market areas and Petite Venise, with time for a meal and a warm indoor break. You can stay for the lights without making the final departure of the night your only way home.
For the example Wednesday, Colmar’s published regular market opening is 11:00. An earlier arrival can work for a town walk, but do not expect every stall to be serving when you step off the train. Include the walk from Colmar station to your first stop, especially if you move slowly, have accessibility needs or meet crowded streets.
Adding several surrounding villages changes a straightforward rail excursion into another transport problem. Save that for a separate day unless you have checked dated buses or shuttles and a realistic journey back.

Freiburg: two markets, two different timings
Use your arrival day to settle in. Next morning, visit the Münstermarkt around the cathedral if you want an everyday food-market stop. This is separate from the Christmas market: regular hours are Monday–Friday 07:30–13:30 and Saturday 07:30–14:00, with no market on Sundays or public holidays. Check the Münstermarkt calendar.
That makes Friday or Saturday a better place for it than departure Sunday. Keep the last full day available for a café, another market visit or a short walk. A winter route does not need a mountain excursion to feel complete. Do not make snow, clear views or dry paths a condition for enjoying it.
How to travel between the three stops
Strasbourg → Colmar → Strasbourg
Search the stations Strasbourg and Colmar in SNCF Connect. Look for a direct regional TER option in each direction, then compare the total return cost and ticket conditions. Select actual dated departures before committing to evening activities; no train number or departure time is presented here as checked for 9 December.
A short rail journey is only part of the excursion. Add the journey from your room to the station, time to find the train, the walk into Colmar and the return walk. Keeping the same accommodation is useful precisely because those smaller tasks add up.
Strasbourg → Offenburg → Freiburg
An established regional route uses the RS4 / Europabahn between Strasbourg and Offenburg, then a train towards Freiburg (Breisgau) Hbf. The corridor is documented by Baden-Württemberg’s transport ministry and DB’s Rheintalbahn information. This establishes the route, not a checked December connection.
Search the full journey in DB’s planner and check operator notices. Does the first service start in Strasbourg? Is engineering work adding a bus? Does your ticket cover the complete selected journey? Use Freiburg (Breisgau) Hbf in Germany, rather than Fribourg/Freiburg in Switzerland.
For a relaxed plan, start by looking for an Offenburg interchange of roughly 20–30 minutes. That is a suggested planning margin, not an official minimum or a guarantee. Adjust for luggage, assistance needs, the actual station route and the next departure. Keep this a transfer day rather than booking an activity soon after arrival.
A date worth checking: 13 December 2026
DB says its new long-distance timetable starts on 13 December, with advance sales opening on 14 October. The example’s departure day falls on that change. Search the exact onward journey under the new timetable before relying on a previous week’s service. DB’s announcement.
If your journey cannot yet be booked, read our guide to planning when train tickets are not on sale yet. An unreleased booking window alone does not mean a route is cancelled.
Do you need an Interrail or Eurail Pass?
Not automatically. This route has two internal rail-travel days: the Colmar return excursion and the move to Freiburg. Start by pricing those tickets, then compare a pass against your complete trip, including travel into and out of the region.
For a longer European journey, a pass may serve more travel than this short route shows. Include any required reservations and check coverage for your exact services. Our pass-versus-individual-tickets guide explains the method; neither option is declared cheaper without dated fares. If you already hold a pass, consider what using a travel day here costs you elsewhere.
Build the budget from six actual room nights
Accommodation is the first number to check if you want a private twin room. Compare three Strasbourg nights and three Freiburg nights, including mandatory charges shown by the property. Then divide the shared room fairly between the travellers.
| Illustrative assumption: two people sharing | Per person |
|---|---|
| Strasbourg: €160 per room/night × 3 ÷ 2 | €240 |
| Freiburg: €130 per room/night × 3 ÷ 2 | €195 |
| Food: €30 × 7 days | €210 |
| Local transport allowance | €30 |
| Optional activities allowance | €25 |
| Contingency | €50 |
| Illustrative total | €750 |
This is a worked planning example, not a quotation or a checked €750 holiday. The room rates and spending allowances are assumptions. It excludes Strasbourg–Colmar return tickets, the cross-border transfer, travel to and from the region, shopping and Rail Trip Planner’s service fee. Add your actual transport quotes before deciding whether the trip fits.
If the shared room costs €40 more each night across six nights, that adds €120 per person. Checking rooms before fine-tuning your snack budget makes sense. If quotes are too high, shorten the trip, change dates or compare accommodation you would be happy to use. Do not preserve an attractive total by quietly replacing a private room with a dormitory.
Only five days? Use a shorter version
A five-day version can use two nights in Strasbourg and two in Freiburg: arrive on day one, visit Colmar on day two, transfer on day three, explore Freiburg on day four and leave on day five. It retains two bases but gives up the full Strasbourg day and the free Freiburg day.
Use it if less unstructured time suits you. If your first arrival is late or final departure early, consider Strasbourg and Colmar only. Five calendar days with two travel-heavy ends can contain much less exploring time than the headline suggests.
Pack for winter, leave space to change your mind
- Shoes suited to wet streets, warm layers and a waterproof outer layer. Snow is not promised.
- A small Colmar day bag so your main luggage can stay at your Strasbourg accommodation.
- A charged phone, saved bookings and offline copies of the addresses you need.
- Indoor breaks each day. Keep outdoor walks optional when conditions or energy make them a poor fit.
- A check-in plan for both bases, including what happens if a train arrives after reception’s usual hours.
Before booking: a short checklist
- Match each market you care about to the organiser’s 2026 calendar. Check Strasbourg’s remaining programme details.
- Price six room nights for your actual occupancy; read check-in and cancellation conditions.
- Find dated Colmar outbound and return trains, with an earlier return option.
- Check the full Strasbourg–Offenburg–Freiburg journey, ticket coverage and engineering notices.
- Check the journey home, especially DB long-distance trains on or after 13 December.
- Compare pass and ticket costs for the whole trip. Add flexible activities once essential travel and rooms fit.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do this without a car?
The main route uses rail-connected city stops. Your accommodation’s location and individual mobility needs still matter. If you add villages or remote walks, check their transport separately rather than assuming they work like the three cities.
Should I sleep in Colmar?
Return to Strasbourg in this version so you change accommodation only once. A Colmar overnight can suit you if a late evening there is the priority. Treat it as a different night distribution, with extra luggage and check-in tasks.
Can I follow it on 24–26 December?
Do not reuse the market plan unchanged. Freiburg’s Christmas market ends on 23 December; Colmar publishes holiday exceptions. Check Strasbourg’s 2026 closing date and each attraction, restaurant and train you need before choosing holiday-week dates.
Is the example map a booking?
No. It illustrates the route and useful places; it does not confirm tickets, rooms or availability. Use it to orient yourself, then check providers for your dates.
