We wanted a week away without hiring a car or changing hotels every other morning. Lisbon and Porto were the two places we really wanted to see, and Coimbra gave us a smaller stop in between.

We kept most afternoons fairly open. Some days that meant another neighbourhood walk; others ended with a long lunch and very little sightseeing afterwards. Having only two main train journeys made the trip feel easy to organise.

One night in Coimbra worked, but it was the place where we would have liked a little longer. We also packed more than we needed, which became obvious on the hills in Lisbon. Next time, smaller bags and an extra night would be the main changes.

Die Reise, Station für Station.

  1. Lisbon

    Portugal · 3 Nächte

We split our time between Alfama, Graça and Belém, rather than trying to cover everything in one day. The viewpoints were a good excuse to stop during the uphill walks. Our arrival afternoon stayed fairly quiet, which helped us settle in. For the journey north, we checked the departure station beforehand instead of assuming all long-distance trains left from the same place.

  2. Coimbra

    Portugal · 1 Nacht

Coimbra was our short break between the two bigger cities. We walked around the university area, explored the old streets and spent part of the evening beside the river. The uphill walk with our bags was less enjoyable than the walk back down without them. We used Coimbra-B for the long-distance trains and allowed extra time to reach the centre.

  3. Porto

    Portugal · 3 Nächte

We spent one day around the historic centre and Ribeira, another walking across to Gaia, and an afternoon around Foz for a change of scenery by the sea. We deliberately left our final morning unplanned. Three nights felt comfortable: enough time to see the places we wanted without making every meal or walk fit a timetable.
